Gaspar de Portolá, Native Americans, and the Foundation of California

The San Francisco Tour Guide Guild continues its educational tour series online.

The presentation “Gaspar de Portolá, Native Americans, and the Foundation of California”, curated by Guild member Steve Johnson, will focus on the Spanish colonization and its impacts on Alta California, as well as pay tribute to the Indigenous people of this region.

This virtual tour will take the viewers on a journey from San Diego to San Francisco Bay, following in the footsteps of the Portolá expedition. Along the way they will see how familiar landmarks got their Spanish name, meet the Native Tribes encountered by the Spaniards, and learn how this expedition laid the roots for the modern state of California. Special attention will be paid to the first sighting of San Francisco Bay by the Spanish and its consequences, and the current condition of California tribes.

Guild member Steve Johnson has a degree in U.S. History from San Francisco State University and has been an educator for 30 years. He has taught California History and, as an actor, has portrayed various California characters (James Marshall, Emperor Norton, Domingo Ghirardelli). He is a National Park Service volunteer on Alcatraz,  the Presidio, and Fort Point, and runs Walkalong Tours in San Francisco. He is a board member of the Pacifica Historical Society.

This presentation is a FREE event for SFTGG members and their 'shelter in place' families and friends/guests. And just like a tour, gratuities are always greatly appreciated. We will be providing Steve's PayPal account to you with the link if interested in doing so.
