Tour Castro Castle and the unique qualities of the Castro!

The tour has been fully subscribed.  On the member's calendar you will see a waitlist event for this tour.  Sigh up on the waitlist, no payment required, and if an  opening occurs, you can join this tour.  This event may be repeated if there is enough demand.

Join Craig Smith and Mark Leuthold in front of the stunning Mediterranean Revival/Baroque/Churrigueresque Mission High School facing Dolores Park on 18th Street.

This high school with the City skyline as a backdrop is especially gorgeous from atop Dolores Park, once we have visited the new play ground, tried out the new restrooms, or better yet guys, the scandalous pissoir!  We pay tribute to the gold fire hydrant that saved the Mission District. We negotiate the neighborhood to the famous victorian house Maison Bleu, searched out by French tourists for decades. There we delight to the romantic song San Francisco, by Maxime Le Forestier.

Lastly we visit the former home of political activist and candidate for SF Supervisor, Dennis Peron, with the motto:  "Sex, Drugs, and Rent Control," and author of the world's first medical marijuana law Proposition 215. The California Compassionate Use Law has lead to the liberalization of domestic marijuana laws and changed the opinions and discourse of the public on the topic and use of hemp. Many prisoners have had their marijuana sentences commuted due to the change of the draconian laws around the nation.

Learn about the history of Dennis Peron's Castro Castle, the realization of a dream fulfilled by Dennis to create a safe house, like the one on Macondray Lane in "Tales of the City."  The living room has been lovingly filled with memorabilia and has become a small museum honoring Dennis since his passing on January 27th, 2018. We will end our tour in this history filled victorian house.

Warning: Marijuana has been smoked in the house and could cause allergies among sensitive people! The home is not wheel chair accessible.

Registrants on this walking tour in the Castro are encouraged to participate and offer interesting commentary or stories if inspired to do so.

We will be meeting in front of Mission High School on 18th Street across from Dolores Park at 12 Noon and will finish by Everett Middle School around 2PM on Saturday February 22, 2020. The walk is about 9 blocks on flat and hilly surface, plus there are three flights of stairs to climb in the Castle.

This unique event is capped at a maximum of 22 participants, so please sign up ASAP.

Castro Castle is not charging for the visit, however they have requested some proceeds from this event will go towards the Dennis Peron PAC, which has been contributing to State Senator of the 11th District Scott Wiener. The State Senator just sponsored The Denis Peron and Brownie Mary ACT SB-34  in support of medical marijuana compassion care programs and signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom October 2019.
