On Thursday morning, the highly anticipated downtown food hall Saluhall flung open its doors to a long line of eager San Franciscans.

“It smells so good down here,” said Mayor London Breed, who marked the momentous occasion with a speech and a pastry demo. And it did — the aroma of fresh cinnamon swirls from in-house bakery Smörgåsland wafted through the air.

Downtown office workers, families with young children and Ikea shoppers filtered into the two-story, 450-seat Market Street space, with some beelining for the pastry case. Smörgåsland was developed with famed Copenhagen restaurant Noma co-founder Claus Meyer (Meyer also consulted on the cooking school upstairs). In addition to fresh baked goods, the eatery offers lunch and dinner options, including a crab Louie open-faced sandwich with Dungeness crab and avocado, a pastrami spice beetroot sandwich and potato flatbreads.

All the Scandinavian-themed food and drink vendors on the street level, including Burgare Bar and a soft-serve stand called Snöberg, are from Ingka Centres, described as “the real estate sister company to IKEA,” while the upstairs level is filled with five beloved Bay Area food businesses. That’s where the party was at on opening day.
