There's Gold in Them Thar Hills! - The 49ers Gold Rush Era!
March 27-28, 2013
You want to know about Gold ... about the Gold Rush, about the players at the time, about the miners, the mail order brides, the entrepreneurs, and the ghosts that still haunt Grass Valley and Nevada City even today!?!
Let's discover a bit of the terrain where these personalities were big players! The generosity of many of our hosts in "them thar hills", has enabled us to offer this unique perspective on the Gold Rush Era!
Tentative Itinerary:
Day One:
First stop in Grass Valley:
Local specialty "Pasty" Lunch with a San Francisco Tour Guide Guild Welcome Reception with our generous Grass Valley/Nevada City hosts!
What's a pasty, you ask?! A pasty is traditionally a meat pot pie thought to have originated in Cornwall, England in the 1800s. This veritable foray into the gold miner's diet, will be an experience in itself!
(Should you have a dietary restriction, please be sure to let us know in advance).
What did mining gold entail? Well, let's find out with a docent led tour of the Empire Mine State Historic Park, www.empiremine.org, the site of the oldest, largest, and richest gold mine in California! From 1850 to its closing in 1956, it produced 5.8 million ounces of gold!!! Our tour will include a visit to the Bourn Cottage and Gardens.
After the tour, a local step on historian/guide, will join us on a bus tour of Grass Valley, sharing it's past and present with us.
The bus will then take us to check in at the Gold Miner's Inn at Holiday Inn Express & Suites, www.goldminersinn.com, in downtown Grass Valley.
The Italian Cultural Center, located in the hotel lobby, is a wealth of information. Be sure to step in to chat with the local historian, Stefano, to learn about the Italian presence in the region!
Equipped with wine tasting and "retail therapy" coupons, now is the time for you to freshen up and step out for some "retail therapy" and some personal exploration.
Prior to dinner, we will have a reception in the old library of the historic Holbrook Hotel, www.holbrook.com, with a haunted tour of the property, interspersed with legends and lore. Renowned singer, writer, and actor, Mark Lyon, will be leading us in our quest, www.hauntedisles.com.
Dinner will be at Steve Graham's, The Owl Grill and Saloon, www.theowlgrillandsaloon.com, in historic downtown Grass Valley. The buildings date back to 1857 and 1862. It used to be the Bank Exchange Saloon; make sure to check out the hand carved cherry wood bar that came around the Horn from Austria! The menu is creative and satisfying; will be provided to all participants.
Alongwith dinner, naturally, there will be entertainment! Local resident and writer, Chriss Enss, www.chrisenss.com, will present her book, "Hearts West" True Stories of mail order brides on a frontier. What else? Well, just you come and see!
Day Two:
Continental Breakfast - check out of hotel
Visit Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum for a fascinating tour of railroad history, www.ncngrrmuseum.org.
Now it's on to the Miner's Foundry, www.minersfoundry.org, in Nevada City, for a local historic walking tour, including the Nevada Theatre, www.thenevadatheatre.com, and the Off Broadstreet Theatre, www.offbradstreet.com.
Hungry? Lunch is at Lefty's, www.leftysgrill.com. Check out their innovative menu!
After lunch, it is "retail therapy" time to browse around Nevada City's eclectic array of shops, boutiques, and cafes.
Thoroughly infused with experiences, enjoy the ride home!

San Jose Walks & Talks - Student Led Journeys "Adobes, Art, Japantown and More in San Jose!"
April 1, 2013 - No Foolin'!
SAN JOSE WALKS & TALKS
"Downtown Walking Tours Led by Students Who Did Their Homework about the City of San Jose"
Mission: San Jose Walks & Talks serves the community by highlighting the unique aspects of downtown San Jose and at the same time provides local students an opportunity to develop real job skills while running their own walking tour company.
Introduction: San Jose is the self-proclaimed capitol of Silicon Valley and a link to a computer industry that reaches all corners of the world. How did this sleepy Spanish pueblo emerge to become the center of technology? The fascinating stories of the city's emergence are actually unknown to most people, even San Jose residents. The colorful past is hidden behind or at times buried below the office buildings that are the modern face of this city. San Jose Walks & Talks hopes to take the people and events that shaped San Jose off the pages of history books and place them in a conversation about our city. We also intend to make our tour relevant to a variety of audiences by introducing culture, art and local business stories.
Visit us at: www.sanjosewalksandtalks.org
Adobe to Adobe Tour - The student-tour guides will be leading you on our Adobe to Adobe Tour which will tell some of the stories of San Jose's beginnings as a Spanish Pueblo to the city's emergence as the center of Silicon Valley. The hour long tour will also highlight some of the art, culture and business background of California's first capital.
Japantown Walking Tour - Self Guided Walking Tour of San Jose's Historic Japantown, with free time for lunch/shopping coupled with an insightful visit to the Japanese American Museum of San Jose, www.jamsj.org. The current exhibit, "On Common Ground", highlights San Jose’s Chinatown and Japantown.
Check out www.japantownsanjose.org or www.jtown.org for detailed information about this authentic and historic haven of Japanese culture!
Door to Door Walking Tour of Art & Design District South of FIrst Street - The part of the tour will be leading you from the doors of the famous Fairmont Hotel past outdoor art projects and through the doors of a handful of museums. We will also feature several murals. This hour long tour will also highlight more of the culture and history of the capital of Silicon Valley.
Car Pool: We could coordinate amongst ourselves to share a ride! Most inexpensive way to go!!!
