Minutes of the SFTGG General Meeting
Tuesday, June 14, 2004
1.  Introduction: Ulla Kaprielian, Board president, called meeting to order at 6:10 pm.
  »  announced 20 year anniversary of the guild
  »  announced door prizes
  »  gave thanks to the members who have helped further Guild business, Pam Dahlen, Jane Menenzes and Nancy McCormick. She also announced that John Howard had resigned the board for health reasons
  »  Introduction of speakers, Sidra Stitch, author of Art Sites San Francisco, and Barbara Hart, SF Helicopter Tours, and introduction of new members of the board, Susan Driscoll, Joyce Ferman, Matt Chatta, Jane Utsumi, Rick Spear, John Eagleton
  »  Reminded the guild that we will need 5 new board members at end of the year
  »  Introduction of newly certified members, Frances Gorman and Joan Wollenberger
  »  Next certification test will be August 23rd.
  »  Request to remind tour participants to contribute $1 to St. Mary's Cathedral.
2.  Report on NFTGA by Susan Driscoll and Jane Utsumi (we have one year trial membership)
  »  Susan reported happy tidings from Peter Hall who is doing well in Maine
  »  Henry Hyman is requesting that the board send in petition for keeping the employee cafeteria at SFO open.
  »  that 85 people attended the NFTGA in Boston, and that most attendees were student tour leaders and per capita tour companies. Most attendees from Washington DC, New York. Althought there were some useful workshops (i.e. how to use your voice, architecture of Boston), she questioned the value of membership and said that SFTGG could better use it's monies to address local issues, and DMC relations.
  »  Jane Utsumi thanked the board for giving her the opportunity to go to the NFTGG meeting, and said that overall she found the meeting useful. She mentioned the Coach Safety class, and the value of contacts made with Marta Cooper, Vice President of the world federation. Reasons to join include. having connection to other tour professionals, over 2000 guides over the world, and the sharing of knowledge. She may be going to the world federation in Melbourne.
  »  Jean Feilmoser announced the World Federation meeting would be held in Australia Jan 30 - February 4, 2005 and urged members to attend. She mentioned the networking benefits, including references from other guides met at World Federation meetings.
3.  Report of Membership by Matt Chatta
  »  Matt introduced new members (13) and asked that any changes in information for the roster be sent to him, with new roster to be issued in six months.
  »  Currently we have 254 members, 67 certified, 142 associate, and 45 friends.
  »  New members introduced themselves
  »  John Eagleton urged new members to take advantage of the mentoring program
4.  Report on Programs by Jane Utsumi
  »  Jane gave thanks to all of the participants who led programs and reviewed upcoming programs, Mary McCloy, Abby Daniels, Malcolm Nicholls, Marilyn Singer, Otto Lissfeld, Renata Coombs, Ulla Kaprielian, Liz Burton, Robert Dimas, Sunny LaGardo, Wolfgang, Joan Wollenberger, Robin Perry
  »  Announcement of upcoming programs and new collaboration with CityGuides.. Upcoming programs include, Victorian Homes Tour, Napa Valley Wine Tour, Basic First Aid course, and Rising Steel. Reminded interested participants to note deadline and RSVP.
  »  Reminded participants to keep attendance verification forms for certification
  »  Reiterated requirements for certification.
5.  Board Finances Report by Rick Spear
  »  Budget for year is $18,000, this is a break even budget. Two largest sources of income is membership dues and programs, two largest expenditures are program expenses and the webiste. Encouraged members to use the new website which contains all programs. Announced upcoming improvment in website capacity to access membership database.
6.  City Business License
  Harry Brass announced the need to file for city business licenses for those who file Schedule C. The franchise tax board is contacting the various cities with names, address and SSN, and business activity for those filing Schedule C. In San Francisco the business license costs $25 but in some cities the charge is based on gross income. Over the road guides may be exempt. Members in San Francisco may go to the City website.
  Cities receiving this information from the franchise tax board are: Alameda, Albany, Concord, Corte Madera, Cupertino, Danville, Fremont, Larkspur, Menlo Park, Napa, Piedmont, Livermore, Oakland, San Anselmo, San Francisco, San Mateo, Vallejo, Redwood City, San Jose,
7.  Special Presentations
  »  Sidra Stich, author of ArtSites San Francisco, gave an overview of her new book which focuses on contemporary art, architecture and design in San Francisco, organized by neighborhood. Sold in bookstores and SF MOMA. Books were offered for sale to members for 15% off.
  »  Barbara Hart of San Francisco Helicopter Tours described the tours offered by her company, and mentioned that commissions would be paid for referrals. This was followed by rep from Chateau Souverein Winery describing his winery and the virtues of the Alexander Valley.
  »  Kirsten Maynard of V Productions, V the Ultimate Variety Show, opening in July 2004, at Pier 39, 2 shows (6 pm and 8 pm) a night 7 nights a week, show comes from Las Vegas (Venetian Hotel), seat 275, full bar and restaurant in venue, will be permanent installation. The the "most amazing" acts from around the world, jugglers, singers, magic, acrobats, comedy, dancing, with changing acts. Offered comission structure and free tickets to all members of guild.
8.  Awarding of Door prize of ArtSites SF book and Helicopter Tour.
